One of the most universal laws states that change is inevitable. This is especially true with the tools we use the most in daily life—our teeth. You may have had extensive dental work done in the past, and perhaps you’ve even replaced a tooth or two. But if you’re unhappy with the results, you always have the option to opt for something better like dental implants.

If you’re ready for a sturdier option for your dental restorations, continue reading. You’ll find information on dental implants and how you can use them to replace your existing work.

What Is A Dental Implant?

These sturdy innovations were designed to completely replace missing teeth from the root up. A titanium post is inserted into the jawbone and prepped to attach to a prosthetic tooth.

Once the post is in, your jawbone will heal around it and eventually fuse with it, creating a permanent fixture. Once the prosthetic tooth is placed, it blends into your smile, making it indistinguishable from a natural tooth.

What Can Dental Implants Replace?

Any tooth that is missing or severely damaged could possibly be replaced with a dental implant. If you had a dental crown that broke and the tooth under it is no longer sturdy, you could opt for an extraction and implant.

You could also replace a dental bridge with an implanted version. In a normal dental bridge, the missing tooth is replaced by a row of crowns that are held in place by natural teeth on either side. In the case of an implant bridge, the missing tooth is replaced with a dental implant for stability.

Implant dentures are also becoming much more popular. Instead of regular dentures that slip and need to be taken out every night, your dentist can provide a series of implants for a new denture to sit on. This allows them to be taken care of like normal teeth.

What Are the Limitations of Dental Implants?

While dental implants are a very versatile treatment option, they do have some limitations. Since the implant is put into the jawbone, there must be enough bone mass to support it.

This can be an issue if you’ve been without teeth for a while as bone density begins to recede with time. However, this can usually be rectified with a bone graft treatment.

If you have underlying health conditions that compromise your immune system or make healing difficult, you may not be a candidate for dental implant treatment. Other factors like smoking also limit your options.

If you’re unsure if you can get the dental implant treatment you want, contact your dentist. The first step on the road to a better smile starts with a consultation to discuss your goals, financing, and treatment options. With a plan in place, all you have to do is follow through.
